Water Damage Classification

lThe IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) sets the standards for the water damage cleaning and restoration.  The Dry Boys are IICRC certified and our water damage experts/technicians follow their guidelines.

There are three categories that describe the type of liquid involved in the water damaged area:

Category One:

With a Category One situation, the liquid is considered a “clean” liquid. This is water from a faucet, shower, etc.  Unfortunately, Category One situations can easily turn into Category Two problems.

Category Two:

This type of liquid is called “grey water”. It contains contaminates that may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. This water may come from dishwashers, washing machines, and sink drains.

Category Three:

Category three is the worst classification and is extremely unsanitary.  If ingested, it could cause severe illness or even death. Often called “black water,” its sources can be sewer backups, flooding from streams or rivers, toilet overflows and also water that has been stagnant with possible bacterial growth.

There are four categories of destruction caused by water/flood damage:

Class One:

Class One water damage is the easiest type of water spill to deal with where only part of a room or area is affected. There is little or no carpet involved and the wet areas are materials like concrete and/or plywood.

Class Two:

This type of damage affects an entire room, including carpeting and/or couch cushions. The wetness has moved up the walls at least 12” and the moisture remains in structural materials.

Class Three:

The water damage in a Class Three situation will have affected ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, and even subfloors.  This water damage often comes from overhead.

Class Four:

Water damage is considered Class Four when the liquid has had time to soak non-porous materials such as brick, hardwood, and even stone. These situations usually require specialty drying.

When you call The Dry Boys for a water damage situation, our technicians will determine the water category and damage class in order to formulate the best approach to return your home or business to normal.
